Professor Fenrong Liu Elected as a Member of the Institut International de Philosophie
The 25th World Congress of Philosophy was held in Rome, Italy, from August 1 to 8. During this prestigious event, the Institut International de Philosophie (IIP) convened its Fellows' Meeting, where Professor Fenrong Liu was elected as a Member of the Institute.
Professor Liu, born in 1975 in Wutai County, Shanxi Province, China. She currently holds a professorship in the Department of Philosophy at Tsinghua University and the Amsterdam-China Logic Visiting Chair at the University of Amsterdam. Additionally, she serves as the Director of the Tsinghua University-University of Amsterdam Joint Research Centre for Logic. In 2015, she was recognized as a Changjiang Distinguished Professor by China’s Ministry of Education. Professor Liu is also a Corresponding Member of the Académie Internationale de Philosophie des Sciences (AIPS). Her academic career has included visiting professorships at Stanford University's Department of Philosophy, Harvard University's Department of Mathematics, and other esteemed institutions, as well as a Berggruen Fellow at Stanford.
Professor Liu's scholarly contributions are most notable in the fields of dynamic preference logic, social agency, the logic of artificial intelligence, and the history of logical thought in both Chinese and Western traditions. She is widely recognized as a founder of dynamic preference logic. Her monograph, Reasoning about Preference Dynamics, received the First Prize in the 7th Outstanding Achievement Award for Research in Institutes of Higher Education and has had a significant impact on the international academic community. Her research on preference and epistemic changes in social networks has also garnered attention from experts in AI and the industry.
The Institut International de Philosophie, founded in Paris, France, in 1937, is one of the most esteemed academic organizations within the global philosophical community. Prior to this recent election, the Institute had 68 elected Fellows and 24 Honorary Fellows from around the world. China has been represented by Fellows Guorong Yang and Bo Chen, along with Honorary Fellows Renzong Qiu and Weiming Tu. The late Youlan Feng and Zehou Li were also Fellows of the Institute.
